“ISRO’s ‘Bahubali’ rocket carries India’s heaviest satellite CMS-03 into orbit”

the heaviest communication satellite to be launched from indian soil for new generation rocket was succesfully placed into the orbit says ISRO.

The satellite has a launch mass of around 4,410 kg, making it the heaviest communication satellite launched from Indian soil into a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO).

The launch took place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) Second Launch Pad, Sriharikota.

On 2 November 2025, ISRO successfully launched the communication satellite CMS-03 aboard its heavy-lift rocket .This marks a major milestone for India’s space programme: previously, ISRO had to rely on foreign launch vehicles for very heavy satellites. With CMS-03 and LVM3-M5, India shows enhanced indigenous capability.

The successful launch enhances “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) goals in the space sector, strengthening domestic launch and satellite manufacturing capability.

The satellite will both support defence communications and civilian services such as remote connectivity, disaster response and digital inclusion in maritime zones and islands.

CMS-03 is a multi-band communication satellite, covering C, extended C and Ku bands, and designed to provide voice, data and video links.

The satellite’s footprint covers not only India’s landmass but also wide stretches of the adjoining Indian Ocean zone, improving connectivity in remote and maritime zones.

It is built with strategic and civilian applications in mind: especially to bolster communication for the Indian Navy across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The ISRO scientists had a tough time with the mission since the weather was not cooperative, but they worked hard and ensured success, he said.
Prior to Sunday’s launch, the Indian space agency has been utilising the services of Kourou launch base in French Guiana by Ariane rockets offered by France-based Arianespace, for launching heavier satellites.
On December 5, 2018 ISRO had launched its heaviest communication satellite GSAT-11 weighing 5,854 kg, onboard an Ariane-5 VA-246 rocket from French Guiana.
LVM3-M5, a three stage launch vehicle with two solid motor strap-ons ($200), a liquid propellant core stage (L110) and a cryogenic stage (C25) gives ISRO full self-reliance in launching heavier communication satellites that weigh up to 4,000 kg in GTO.

5 दिसंबर, 2018 को इसरो ने फ्रेंच गुयाना से एरियन-5 वीए-246 रॉकेट के जरिए 5,854 किलोग्राम वजनी अपने सबसे भारी संचार उपग्रह जीसैट-11 को प्रक्षेपित किया था।
एलवीएम3-एम5, दो ठोस मोटर स्ट्रैप-ऑन ($200), एक द्रव प्रणोदक कोर चरण (एल110) और एक क्रायोजेनिक चरण (सी25) से युक्त तीन चरणीय प्रक्षेपण यान, इसरो को भारी संचार उपग्रहों को प्रक्षेपित करने में पूर्ण आत्मनिर्भरता प्रदान करता है, जिनका वजन जीटीओ में 4,000 किलोग्राम तक होता है।
